Climbing the Rope at Crossfit

On Friday, our crossfit workout was a series of Barbell Thrusters and Rope Climbs. Wade is accusing me of being proud of myself for climbing the rope, and I must confess, he’s right.  I climbed a 15 foot rope 16 times, while doing barbell thrusters sets in between sets of climbs. Crossfit is allowing me to do things that I thought was not possible. I realize now why ripped callouses and rope burns are a badge of honor.  Want to see me shin?  There’s a reason I wrapped my sweat shirt around my left shin for the climbs - ouch.

Congratulations to Ethlene who came with me on Saturday for her first crossfit workout.  Way to go !!!!

1 Month Crossfit Anniversary

I started going to the Next Generation Crossfit gym with Wade exactly 1 month ago today.  I don’t have a before and after picture to share with everyone like Wade, but I will say that it is making dramatic differences in my life too.  I was a college athlete and have gone through my share of grueling workouts, but crossfit is on a whole new level of fitness.  It’s a cross between weight lifting, gymnastics, and endurance training.  Every workout is different so your muscles are always confused about what’s coming next and you can never get bored.  Each workout consists of reps and rounds of different movements (i.e. deadlifts, pullups, lunges, pushups, situps, squats, etc.)  The trainer says “ready, set, go” and we all compete against the clock to post our best time for that workout.  I have lost over 10 pounds in a month and more importantly I am getting much stronger.  In fact during yesterday’s workout I finally beat Wade !!!  This is no small accomplishment and I probably won’t be able to do it again for a long time.  I’m finally feeling like a real “Crossfitter”; I started filing the callouses on my hands, I’m doing real pushups (and lots of them), kipping pullups are in sight, and I beat Wade for the first time !!!!!  I love crossfit !!!

Chick-fil-A scores again!!!!

On my quest to eliminate high fructose corn syrup from my diet I’ve had to completely revamp my drink menu. I’ve cut out the nectar of the gods, the ambrosia of Texas - Dr. Pepper. I’ve been hopelessly addicted to the stuff for years, so I have tried to find alternate drinks to help maintain my DP abstinence.

Of course I never go anywhere without my water bottle, but a girl likes a little flavor sometimes too. While I was out with the kids yesterday we drove through one of our favorite restaurants Chick-fil-A. I was a little hesitant to drive through because the line was at least 12 cars long. But in Chick-fil-A fashion they had several employees outside taking orders from car windows. This sped things up tremendously and we had our food in under 3 minutes!!! Great service.

I ordered their famous lemonade with my meal, but I was a little unsure of the sweetener they use in it. If Chick-fil-A was to follow the crowd and take the economical route they would probably use corn syrup in their recipe. I would never know unless I asked, so I did. The recipe is water, lemons, and REAL SUGAR!!!! Outside of grocery stores, Chick-fil-A is the largest purchaser of fresh lemons in the U.S., they squeeze 71 million lemons every year. A large glass of lemonade at Chick-fil-A gives you 35% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C and uses real sugar (the diet version uses Splenda.) On top of all that drinking real lemonade helps keep kidney stones at bay and you can buy it by the gallon.

So chalk one up for Chick-fil-A.

Update on HFCS

I’m hesitant to say anything yet, because I’m likely to fall off the wagon on any given day, (especially those high stress days like the Family Festival.) But as of today, I’ve lost nearly 5 pounds by just cutting out High Fructose Corn Syrup. The bulk of my HFCS intake comes from one source - Dr. Pepper. I’m substituting my Pepper habitat for iced tea, specifically Sobe Green Tea, and feeling loads better. I can’t say I’ve noticed any marked difference in my memory or mental abilities (but I didn’t have much to begin with :-) ) But I have more energy and I’m losing that pesky tummy bulge.

My dear brother sent me 12 bottles of Dublin Dr. Pepper and I savor one every day. My stash is running low so I’m going to need to make a road trip soon. If anyone is going to Texas (or Edmond) any time soon, pick me up a few cases of the delicious nectar. I’ll owe you big.

Down with HFCS and up with sugar!!!!!!!!

No More HFCS !!!

Have you heard? Surely you’ve heard by now? High Fructose Corn Syrup is a nasty, evil, mean ingredient in about 70% of processed foods in America. We are all getting fat and unhealthy on the stuff. In my meager efforts to get fit for the looming swim suit season I picked up a health magazine and read an article that claims, “eating even small amounts of high-fructose corn syrup can impair the body’s appetite supressing hormones, making weight loss nearly impossible.” - First - May 2008

Of course this got my attention and I had to keep researching. I learned that HFCS raises blood pressure, ages the liver, makes the skin sag, upsets the pancreas which cause high blood sugar, insulin, resistance and diabetes. It also scrambles your thinking. Some research even suggests a link to Alzheimer’s. The research does show that people who consume large amounts of HFCS are five times more likely to score below average on memory tests…………ummm, what was I talking about?

Oh, yes, HFCS. High Fructose Corn Syrup is found in almost every soda, energy drinks, Capri Sun, Kool-Aid, Sunny-D, Snapple, Hawaiian Punch, Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice. I just went through my cupboards and it’s in almost everything from my Slim Fast bar, breakfast cereal, peanut butter, granola bars, Campbell Soup, mac-n-cheese, animal crackers, Hungry Jack syrup, Yoplait yogurt, Home Pride Wheat bread, Heinz ketchup, Smuckers raspberry jelly, even A1 Steak Sauce.

In the late 1960s food manufacturers started swapping good old-fashioned sugar for the man-made and cheaper sweetener - high fructose corn syrup. It seems like more than mere coincidence that America’s obesity trends began to climb at this same time. According to the USDA the annual consumption of HFCS has jumped from 1/2 pound per person in 1970 to 62.4 pounds per person today. No wonder it seems harder and harder to lose weight.

Well, today’s the day - no more HFCS for me, I’m on the wagon. This is going to be no small feat since I’m hopelessly addicted to Dr. Pepper. I do have one consolation though - Dublin Dr. Pepper. The bottling plant in Dublin, Texas still makes Dr. Pepper with the original recipe of Imperial Cane Sugar and not corn syrup. Jason’ Deli here in Tulsa sells Dublin Dr. Pepper, so you will probably see me at JD’s several times a week now. Otherwise, I’ll have to make a road trip to Dublin for the “good stuff.”

GROSS ALERT: Kidney Stone Home Remedy

On October 8, 2000 during my first trimester with Caleb, I went in for my initial ultrasound. During the visit we learned that the baby was developing beautifully, but in addition to giving birth to a boy, I would soon be delivering 2 very large kidney stones (1cm and 2cm.) For those of you who have suffered with this ailment you know that these “stones” should have been labeled “rocks” instead because they were so large. It was like Plymouth and Gibraltar were growing in my kidney. Needless to say, the pregnancy and delivery were complicated and very arduous as a result of the stones. When Caleb was 11 days old, I was back in the hospital for my first ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy - a procedure that uses shock waves to break up a kidney stone into small pieces that can more easily fit through the urinary tract and pass from the body.)

Over the next four years I was in and out of the ER and hospital for a total of 7 lithotripsies and thousands and thousands of dollars. I changed my diet drastically and began consuming buckets of water, but because of an abnormal type of kidney (medullary sponge kidney) my body continued to make stones. This was getting old fast, and very expensive. There had to be a better way, so I began educating myself about urology and nephrology. I read everything I could find about kidney stones, their prevention and cure, including home remedies.

One Sunday at church, I casually mentioned one of the home remedies I’d read about to a friend and he said, “Yeah, I know about that cure, it worked for me - twice.” I was stunned, a home remedy given credibility by a trusted friend. With a bit of skepticism, I considered giving it a try. So during my next attack, I sent Wade to the grocery store to purchase the two common ingredients for the remedy. I followed the instructions of the remedy and waited. I only had to wait about 45 minutes before the 4mm stone passed. I was shocked, giddy, elated. It worked!!!! I had been relieved of the pain and hassle of a kidney stone with about $5 dollars worth of supplies and 45 minutes. This was revolutionary for me. Could this mean no more ER visits, no more huge sums of money spent on ESWLs, no more senseless pain? The answer for me has been YES !!!! I have not visited the ER due to kidney stones nor had an ESWL or any real stone pain for the past 3 years.

I continue to visit my family physician every 6 months for a KUB (kidney, ureter, bladder) x-ray for extra measure. When I do have a stone, I rush home to perform the remedy. When I return to the doctor’s office for a follow up x-ray they are always baffled about the expediency of the home remedy.

Like 80% of stone formers, I make calcium oxalate stones. Our kidneys are the cleaners of the body, they filter blood to remove excess mineral salts and other wastes. Part of the cleaning process is to produce urine that excretes the waste from the body. Kidney stones form when your urine becomes so saturated with calcium oxalate and other minerals that no more of it can dissolve into the urine. Its kind of like trying to dissolve too much sugar in your tea. So, the undissolved portion of the mineral develops into crystals. These crystals bunch together to form barbed stones that hurt like the dickens when they travel from the kidney, through the ureter, down to the bladder and out through the urethra. This process can be more painful for men (so I’m told) because the urethra in males is longer than in females. Up until the urethra, kidney stones are equal opportunity pains in the……you know where.

The remedy is simply chemistry in reverse. Chemistry forms stones in the first place, so it makes sense that chemistry can destroy them. For the low, low price of $49.99 you too can be kidney stone free and I will share with you the two ingredients you need for this home remedy. Just kidding. All you need is a 2 liter of Coca Cola and a bunch of asparagus (8 ounzes.) Within a 15 minute period, drink the entire 2 liter of Coke, wait 10 minutes then consume the pureed asparagus. It is important to puree the asparagus and eat this like a soup. I put lemon juice and a little salt for taste. Follow this by drinking several glasses of water. You will feel miserably full for about an hour, but relief should come quickly. During this time, I can actually feel the stone moving from my back and around my side. I have only minimal pain during this process. It sure beats the ER and $4000.

Please be smart about this. If you know you have a stone and it’s under.5cm then you might want to try the remedy. What can it hurt? But if you’re experiencing excruciating pain and you’re not sure what’s going on, GO TO THE DOCTOR!!!!! I’m not a physician, I’m just a kidney stone former who has found a home remedy that works for me.

So how does it work? From what I understand, the phosphoric acid in the Coke begins to dissolve the calcium oxalate stone, then the asparagus (which is a natural diuretic) helps expel what’s left. GROSS ALERT: (I guess if you’ve read this far, you don’t really care) I’ve actually done a little research of my own and put a previously passed stone in a bowl with Coke. After about 3o minutes it was a mushy mess. It had been dissolved. I did the same experiment with lemon juice and got the same results. During one particularly painful episode I knew I was facing a large stone, so I drank lemon juice and real lemonade for a week, when I did the home remedy I passed a smooth stone. It looked like a baby river rock. The lemon juice had knocked the edges off and had actually shrunk the stone so it could pass. Since then I have combined lemon juice with my 2 liter of Coke and have gotten very good results.

Once again, I’m not a urologist, nephrologist, or any other kind of “ologist.” I’m simply telling a story about my journey with kidney stones. To date, I’ve passed nearly a dozen stones with this remedy ranging from 1mm to 5mm in size. After hearing about a close friend who was in the ER because of a painful stone, I wanted to share my story. I merely hope that reading this will help someone else avoid the pain of kidney stones. It’s too gross and embarrassing to tell it for any other reason. Yuck.

Your stone-free friend - Heather.
