I have been drawing and painting since I could hold a crayon. My earliest art teacher was Ola Mae Heflin, she is also my grandma. On every visit to Grandma and Grandpa’s house she would take me into her studio for a lesson. I have learned so much from her about the medium of oils and how to see and paint every color in a desert sunset. I will forever associate the odor of turpentine and oil paint with her. To an artist these are the aromas of our expressions.
I fell in love with the works of Claude Monet and the other Impressionists while living in Paris in the mid 1980s. Pierre-Aguste Renoir,Camille Pissaro, Paul Gauguin
, Alfred Sisley, Paul Cezanne, Berthe Morisot and of course Mary Cassatt have brought freshness and light to the world through their paintings. I have also been influenced by Vermeer, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Velazquez, and Turner. I began a series of reproducing the works of the great masters several years ago and have found it to the be the singular most helpful tool in learning to paint.
